Independence may not have truly been ratified on the fourth of July, but it's a lot easier to celebrate on the fourth then it is to celebrate on each individual day someone got a chance to sign their name.

i just find it funny that they measure it from there instead of when it was actually officially put into affect in august when delegates signed it, if they never had signed it, there would of never been a declaration of independence so why measure it from the time of proposition?

And danny you must have a seriously warped view of British government, the lords have no power other than the power to delay passage of legislation. I for one prefer our FPP, parliamentary system of democracy to the states system of electing representatives to elect a representative. You should also note that A) America is more of an empire than Britain is today B) it was a war between cousins, Americans fought their own. And C) we live in the 21st century why are you still bitter over something that none of us were around for and occurred 300 years ago nearly.

To put my own view forward, i am disgusted with Americas treatment of the world and impact on world peace. It's also funny that a country that prides itself on democracy wouldn't let unhappy settlers of the south break away peacefully and form their own nation.

If you consider France better is was because Napoleon fleet got sunk on that time..because he forgot english was a navy nation..he lost 460 ships on that battle.If it was a passage between france and engligand by foot...surely London would speak french now..or german if we count Hitler.

Seriously though, yeah, basically we caught the Brits with their shorts down in the American Revolution, they returned the favor in the War of 1812. And for the past century we have been allies, so why can't we act like it instead of acting like children taking potshots back and forth across the pond at each other. It just reinforces the stereotypes that are held about both nations.

As for what our government is doing, when folks from other nations take potshots at our "president" they are typically preaching to the choir. A vast majority of us over here despise him and his administration (myself, I wouldn't piss on him if he were on fire), however it still does put us a bit on the defensive to hear folks from other nations take shots at him. It's kind of like having a brother that you hate, but only you are allowed to rip into him.

So basically, can we stop acting like "Ugly Americans" and "Stuck-Up Brits" just for a little while?

Whilst browsing Milovana, I cameth acrosst an odd post, just in amidst the other forum posts. It asketh whether 'whilst' should be used in teases. I knoweth that when I readeth a tease and findeth this word in amongst perfectly good other words, it pulleth me out of the tease.

So, I am againsteth it.

This is far too prescriptive...the simple fact is that 'whilst' is a variant of 'while' in terms of common usage, and either is technically fine to use. Of course, 'while' is better for use in informal style, so unless the mistress is some sort of eighteenth century chick, I wouldn't use it ;). Sounds much too posh.

If the main attack here is vocabulary, the problem is that there are those of you who won't expand yours enough to take in a single, simple word.

Seriously, it can't hurt a tease that bad, give me a break. I have never felt pulled out of a tease because it used a simple word that served its' purpose.

No offense, but this whole thing just feels nitpicky.
