From what I have read, the risks are rupturing of a testicle from smacking or torsion of a testicle from pulling/twisting. Tying your balls has a risk of permenant tissue damage!

I think the main thing is to be sensible and be guided by your own pain levels. Start slow and build up gradually. You can always smack harder but you can't unsmack once the blow has been landed.

Great advice out there on this topic - the most important being that if you aren't sure, don't do it!
Try to find your limits by gradual experimentation. Just push a little tiny bit further each time until you find a limit for yourself. You do not want to do anything to your balls that would cause sharp pain or swelling that would continue after the session (dull aching is of course a natural side effect of whacking those guys!).
