Lifehacker wrote:Top 10 Simple Privacy Tricks Everyone Should UseProtecting your privacy on the internet these days seems like a hefty undertaking, but there are a few things you can do to protect your privacy with just the click of a button. Here are our favorite super-simple tricks.

We've talked about our 10 favorite privacy hacks before, but a lot of times inducing a privacy-oriented overhaul on your workflow is time consuming, and sometimes it just might not fit the way you work (it's not imperative, of course, that everyone quit Facebook without quitting Facebook, and your less tech-savvy friends and relatives may not have the patience for the more involved set-ups. These tweaks are, instead, very simple tricks that we think everyone should use, whether you're a tin-foil hat wearer or you just want to reduce the spam in your email inbox. They're so simple, in fact, that even the less tech-savvy should have no problem setting them up with a few clicks.

Honestly, I can't see what harm it does to use your real birthday for sign-ups.

@Handcuffed : some banks will ask for it (when someone stole your card number), and also it is usually in the process of password recovery. Anyway, everything that will be used by marketters (and others) in order to improve identification should be avoided (if you want privacy).

@Indigo : you may always use the same fake birthday
For an extra level of security online, surf using highly anonymous proxy server
I could find some false anonymous proxy server (!), and anyway most of them will not accept HTTPS (lesser of 2 evils ?)
My sig is your sig.

I am pretty sure most requests for date of birth are to ensure you are over
13, or 18, or other statute age limit.
They only want an answer not proof in almost all cases.

Given the retarded data archiving directive put forward by the EU over the last few years, in good company with Swedens IPRED law, using a proxy (or VPN) is soon to be considered a necessity I'm afraid. Although I have nothing to hide and probably never will, I'd MUCH rather risk giving proxy server hosts access to tap my traffic, than letting authorities map everything I do as they please. No thanks.
Yes, I most certainly CAN do it again!

https://www.torproject.org/ would be an alternative. Otherwise, there are more than enough anonymus proxy servers.

The problem I see is that most are only available for like 20 hours and than shutdown or change IP.
