As have been said, if you have 32-bit java you will need 32 bit VLC and vice versa. So confirm that both are the same. ;-)

well since I have a 64 bit windows and had both versions of java installed it shouldn't have mattered that I was using a 32bit VLC, but installing 64bit VLC instead allowed ...

I installed VLC separetly and now java doesn't freeze anymore, but the videos still refuse to play and the logs complained about:
